Bert Smith was born on 8 September 1886 in Curry Rivel and was one of 11 children born to Frederick and Mary Ann. The family were living in Curry Rivel at the beginning of their married life but by 1894 they had moved to Drayton, living at Haywards Way.
Bert emigrated to New Zealand, date unknown but he wasn’t at home on the 1911 census and he doesn’t show up living anywhere else in the UK.
Bert married Mary Ryan on the 22 June 1916 in Palmerston North, New Zealand. Their son, James Herbert was born on 28 February 1917.
In May 1917 Bert attested. He was 31 years old and, measured 5ft 3 inches and weight 137 pounds. By September he was on his way to France, serving with the 2nd Battalion of the Canterbury Regiment, N.Z.E.F.
Bert was killed in action on the 24 August 1918 and is buried at Grevillers British Cemetery in France.
