Drayton Wassail 2020

A day early because the 5th of January (Old New’s Eve) fell on a Sunday this year, Drayton Wassailers carried on the ancient tradition of the Drayton Wassail last night. Around the village they went, singing the Drayton Wassail song to various households. They paused at Norse Cottage and after they had sang for their supper, were invited in to partake of drink and food. Jane Markham and Bill Broomfield recorded the voices for the archives. Ending up at the Drayton Crown for their final performance of the evening. How lucky we are to have this tradition carrying on in our village.

  1. Dear Jacqui
These are great shots of this custom. A few years ago I was lucky enough to be invited on tour with the Curry Rivel Wassailers (an great experience especially traveling down the lanes in the back of their van!) and promised to return to experience the Drayton Wassail. So I wonder whether it is on this year and whether the itinerary will be the same? I would be very interested in attending and wonder if you put me in contact with the organiser of the custom so please feel free to pass on my email. Merry Xmas and Happy New Year (for the 5th!)
