DRAYTON REMEMBERS – HERBERT ALFORD – 27148 – SOMERSET LIGHT INFANTRY

Herbert Alford was born in Drayton in 1889, one of eleven children. His parents were James and Sarah, nee Hodges. They lived in North St.  In April 1911 Herbert was at home in Drayton for the 1911 census, but just 3 months later he was getting married to Louisa Willey in Chipping Sodbury. Their first son, Frederick was born in September of the same year, in Chipping Sodbury.  Louisa was at home with her parents for the 1911 census in Hambridge.

There are no Army records of Herbert’s Attestation papers or other Army documents still in existence.. We do know that he was killed in action on the 7 October 1916 and is remembered on the Thievpal Memorial in France.

Herbert & Louisa had 3 children, Frederick mentioned above, William, who was born in 1913 but died in 1914 and Verne who was born on the 8 Feb 1917, so Herbert would never have met this son.
