St Catherine’s Church

St Catherine, Drayton

St Catherine’s church is a Grade 1 listed building standing prominently in the centre of the main street of the village, opposite the Drayton Crown pub. Mostly built in the 15th century using local Blue Lias stone with Hamstone finishes, it has some outstanding stained glass windows, and is surrounded by its ancient and peaceful churchyard where you can see a “preaching cross” by the south door, and two ancient yew trees.

St Catherine’s has been the centre of village care, love and wellbeing for centuries. We are currently without a full time Vicar, though, but a reorganisation is under way which will see us joining the Benefice of Curry Rivel, Fivehead and Swell – a process which should be completed in 2024. Nonetheless worship continues, and a service (normally Eucharist with hymns) is usually held at 1100 on the second Sunday of each month.

Refreshments are usually served after the service – and a warm welcome and a cup of ‘proper’ coffee always awaits!

Church members are involved in many aspects of village life and societies, and Drayton Market, selling all sorts of produce, is held on the third Saturday in each month. Funds raised there go to support the fabric of the church – the church building.

Other fundraising: Other events during the course of the year include a Safari Supper in late August – always well supported by villagers, whether churchgoers or not. Look out for details on this and other events – including concerts – throughout the year.

Bellringing: The church has a fine ring of eight bells (tenor c 16 cwt), two of which date back to 1611 – over four hundred years old – and a third dates from 1654.

Anyone interested in learning to ring, or in joining the band of ringers would be made very welcome. Contact the Tower Captain, Tricia Robinson, on 01458 251440.

Life events: All enquiries concerning baptisms, weddings and funerals should go in the first instance to John Highnam, Churchwarden, on 01458 252398.

The church postcode is TA10 0JT.
